History of the Department (establishment etc.)

The department of commerce was established in 1977(UG)

At present, the department is imparting education to 422 students by 5 faculty members. Since the inception of the department, it has been doing yeoman service by educating in the field of trade and commerce. This approach has been truly influencing students to excel both academically and intellectually. In addition to this department also encourages students to develop profundity in trade and commerce which has helped them to explore their talent and potential to a greater extent. As a matter of fact, this initiation has motivated students to develop their critical bend of mind to enhance and enrich their innate skills.

The students have bagged in all 4 ranks to Rani Channamma University and also department has produced 14Gold medalists and 223 centum scorers.

Ph.D awarded to two faculty members Shri C V Koppad and Shri B M Hiremath in the year 2018 and 2019 respectively.

Faculty

The department of Economics is one of the oldest departments. It was established in 1961 with the inception of the college. It was taught as a major subject for BA programme. Later, a course in Economics for BCom programme was started in 1977. At present, Economics is taught as an optional subject.

Shri. S. G. Kulkarni was the first to lead the department. Shri. S. G Karabantanal and Shri. N. Halayya served as faculty and also as principals of college. Great teachers like Dr. A. P. Biradar Patil and Shri. B. R. Patil have put in great services in the department.

The objective of the department is to make the students understand the basics of Economics through micro and macro theories. The department also makes every effort to enhance the analytical skills of students through unique events like elocution competitions in association with a Forum of Free Enterprise, Mumbai, field surveys, report writing, seminars, essay competitions and group discussions.

At present, Dr. B. S. Kamble is the head of the department accompanied by Shri. M. S. Vanaki. Dr. B. S. Kamble has completed his PhD on “An Economic Analysis on Leather Footwear Units: A Case Study of Athani, Belgaum District”, awarded on 13th August 2005 under UGC FIP Scheme. Shri. M. S. Vanaki has completed his MPhil on “Transport Development in India: A Case Study of Road Transport in Belgaum District” awarded on 2nd July 2008.

The faculty has good number of paper presentations and publications. They are members of reputed professional bodies and they worked as resource persons at various institutions, seminars and conferences.

The department was enriched with grant of Rs. 1.83 Lakh from UGC under IX and X plan periods for Minor Research Projects and Rs.60000 for national conference.

Faculty
